Roberta Cowell had been a racing driver, a Spitfire pilot and a prisoner of war – but her biggest challenge was to become the first person in Britain to undergo gender-reassignment surgery.  As such she was one of the first people in the world to undergo what was, in 1948, pioneering surgery.
